University of Flensburg

The Europa-Universität Flensburg is a small and dynamic university located at the very edge of Northern Germany. It is an innovative and international university which offers many interesting programmes, such as European Studies, International Management Studies or the newest European Cultures and Society.

History

As the northernmost university in Germany, Europa-Universität Flensburg is a young university, having previously been called the "College of Education" (1946-1994) and with 5,000 students and 400 employees it is is able to provide quality education and proximity to the students.

Education

Subjects and courses offered at Europa-Universität Flensburg include humanities and theologies, art, textiles and music, educational sciences, teacher education, special education, mathematics, natural sciences, technology, general studies, health and nutrition, language, culture and media studies, European studies, sports science, economics and social sciences.

The main focus is on teacher training and international management.

Research

  • Academic research at the Europa-Universität Flensburg focuses on the areas of education, economics, environmental sciences/sustainable development and interdisciplinary European studies. In academic research the subject areas justice, sustainability and diversity are interconnected. A special focus of the research being carried out at the university is Europe and European issues.
  • A special feature is the University’s close cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Flensburg, which is based on the same campus, and with the University of Southern Denmark.

Career

Europa-Universität Flensburg and the University of Applied Sciences share a Career Center on campus. Among the activities organized by this center are: job fairs, visits to local businesses and work providers, publication of job and internship announcements for students, career counselling, student training courses, etc.

Student services

Every semester the International Center organizes various events for all students and employees of Europa-Universität Flensburg to support the intercultural and language exchange on campus. The events usually take place in the Rotunde.

Before the Winter semester starts, the new students are welcomed by "Campus Angels" which assist the students in registering in the university, in finding accommodation, in registering in the city hall, in showing the city and in integrating the new students through the organisation of various group activities.

Housing services

  • In comparison to other university towns, the housing market in Flensburg is good.
  • Flats, bedsits and rooms in flatshares available to let are advertised on the students' portals of the Students' Union of Europa-Universität Flensburg and the Students' Union of the University of Applied Sciences Flensburg.
  • Accommodation is also advertised in the local newspapers and several websites, where you can also advertise if you are looking for a place to rent.

Library services

In the Central Library students eager to learn can find scientific literature. The library serves both students of the Europa-Universtität Flensburg and students of the Unversity of Applied Sciences Flensburg. It provides access to 421,000 books and over 18,000 electronic journals and e-books.

ICT services

Free WifiAll students can use free wifi in the University Sports Center. Some cardiovascular exercise machines provide direct internet access. By 2016 this service will be available at all machines. 

Medical services

In Germany, all students up to the age of 30 are subject to compulsory health insurance (currently approx. 80 € monthly).

Campus life

Germany's most northern university, with 5,000 student,s offers a very personal atmosphere. At Europa-Universität Flensburg we place particular emphasis on providing support and we value personal exchange with students and staff alike. At our University people know each other. Students are not just numbers lost in the crowd, but have names and faces who you will meet again and again. The University also sets great store by its international orientation, currently the International Centre cooperates with 80 partner universities in 32 countries around the globe.

Sports facilities

  • The campus with its various paths provides runners with many running trails. Runners can choose whether they would like to run up the slight hills, or shorter routes around the lakes.
  • Whether you want to play badminton, football or baseball, the wide green areas of the campus offer ideal conditions for sports activities to clear your head between or after lectures. Right across campus is the local swimming pool and sauna.
  • On campus you can also find a sports center with a fitness studio, which a reduced price for students. Here you can practice several group or individual sports and as well enjoy the comfort of a relaxation area at the end of your intense activity.

Student clubs

Within the framework of Student Self-Administration students (directly or indirectly) choose their own representatives, in particular for:

  • The Student Parliament (StuPa) is the central collegial organ of all students and the parliament that represents students from all departments. It decides on students' affairs such as the budget, the semester ticket and on rules or regulations. StuPA elects the students' executive committee: AStA.
  • General Student Committee (AStA) is the collegial management body and is authorised by StuPa, the executive body representing the interests of all students. It consists of different departments and the management board (e.g.higher education policy, social affairs, culture or sports).
