Studio Arts College International (SACI)

Studio Arts College International (SACI) is more than an opportunity to study abroad in Florence, the birthplace of the Renaissance: it’s an experience you will carry with you, in your career and throughout your life.

History

SACI was founded in 1975 by renowned painter Jules Maidoff, a Fulbright scholar who had come to Florence two decades earlier to paint. Finding a city thriving with art and abundant with life, he determined to use his experience to offer the finest and most challenging training to the next generation of artists, art historians, and art conservators.

Education

Accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD), SACI offers a wide range of innovative, hands-on graduate and undergraduate programs in traditional and contemporary studio arts, design, conservation, art history, and Italian language and culture.

Research

SACI engages in leading areas of research and exploration, interacts with the community through artistic and social programs, and prepares students to excel in their chosen field.

Short Courses

Student services

At SACI, we offer a Pre-departure, Orientation, and Re-entry Support guide to outline the cultural and professional support for students during pre-departure orientation and re-entry services to maximize the global-minded study abroad experience.

Housing services

SACI apartments are available during all terms in Florence, and are fully furnished to allow you to live independently. The apartments differ in style, furnishings, and amenities. Although most have been recently renovated, each apartment is unique; some apartments are in buildings dating back to the Renaissance and others are only a few decades old.

During the Fall and Spring terms, you can choose to share everyday life with an Italian host family in Florence—the best housing option for students seeking to understand the Italian culture and the way of life in Florence. It is strongly recommended for students who wish to improve their knowledge of the Italian language.

Library services

SACI's Worthington Library holdings include approximately 13,500 books, monographs and exhibition catalogs in the areas of art and art history, literature and criticism. There are extensive sections devoted to art history, conservation, museology, Italian history, language, film, literature and music.

ICT services

There are computers available for e-mail and internet research in both SACI buildings. Students may also choose to bring their own laptops. Wireless access is available in the main building and at the Jules Maidoff Palazzo for the Visual Arts. Wifi is provided in all SACI apartments.

Medical services

In emergency cases, you will always be treated in public Italian hospitals, regardless of health coverage. Do not hesitate to go to a hospital if needed! If necessary, one of the administrative staff will accompany you to the hospital to help you with the entire procedure and to translate. Keep the emergency SACI numbers handy for assistance during non-office hours.

Campus life

The Palazzo dei Cartelloni, SACI's main building in the heart of Florence, includes a beautiful gallery and exhibition space, the Clayton Hubbs Lecture Hall, the SACI Worthington Library, two darkrooms, offices, an art conservation laboratory, and studio/classrooms surrounding a large, traditional Italian garden. The spacious and light-filled interiors, restored to their original Baroque magnificence, feature painted ceilings, frescoed walls, and marble floors. Its location is close to the Duomo, the churches of San Lorenzo and Santa Maria Novella, and just steps away from the central market and the Alinari photography archives.
