Kadir Has University

Deeply rooted in its founding principles, Kadir Has University, founded in 1997, is dedicated to establishing itself as an international center for research and scientific development, and is an attractive place for international students and scholars. Kadir Has University’s overarching priority is to enhance its global presence and to become a place of first choice through continuous reform and adaptation to global demands across a range of areas.

The founder of the University, Kadir Has, was one of the most important businessmen in Adana, working in the automotive trade. He moved to Istanbul in 1960 and became a prominent business figure in the city, founding the Mercedes Automotive and Truck factory and Coca-Cola Company in Turkey. He was also a partner of Peugeot minibus producers and distributor for Michelin tyres.

Kadir Has was a benefactor for important activities in education and health and believed that he had an honourable and loyal obligation to give back to Turkey. He established the Kadir Has Foundation for Education and bequeathed his entire estates to the cause. Kadir Has’ biggest passion was the establishment and improvement of his namesake university.

Our aim at Kadir Has University is to create an environment of education, research, and discussion at the level of the best universities in the world. Thus we offer education based on both traditional disciplines and interdisciplinary models; we foster the skills necessary for continuing social and cultural development; and, while helping students prepare for the future, we encourage their search for higher truths.

The central tenet of Kadir Has University’s philosophy is to produce students who are self-confident, who question, who consider all perspectives and evaluate them without prejudice, and who are open to the winds of change. We want students to see that as successful scholars and fulfilled individuals, they are the leaders of their societies.

Living in Istanbul

Istanbul has a rich history as a city that was the capital of three empires and uniquely sits across two continents – Asia and Europe. In 2012 there were approximately 11.6 million foreign visitors to Istanbul, making it the world’s fifth most popular tourist destination. As one of the largest cities in Europe there is plenty to see and do.

For culture, you can visit many historical places of interest such as the Blue Mosque, Aya Sofia museum or Topkapi Palace. You can see where Florence Nightingale nursed troops in the 19th century or admire the Turkish carpet display at the Museum of Turkish and Islamic Arts. You can visit Istanbul’s many art galleries, or take part in one of the numerous cultural events and festivals that take place in the city each year.

Taking a break from your studies you can explore the historic bazaars, including the Grand Bazaar, which, having opened in 1461, is the world’s oldest and largest covered market. You can browse the shopping centres and try the local cuisine at the multitude of restaurants across the city or sample the local Turkish Delight. There are plenty of bars, night clubs and Turkish taverns, as well as cinemas, concert halls and theatres.

To unwind you can relax and enjoy one of the many traditional Turkish baths, such as the Cemberlitas Baths, one of the oldest dating back to the 1500s, or enjoy some time out in one of the parks or outdoor spaces that Istanbul offers.
