This module aims to provide grounding in the core competencies related to management and leadership in the organisation enabling you to apply theory to practice in management. Alongside this, it will provide opportunities to develop personal skills through workshops in leadership such as communication and team building.

Learning Outcomes:

On completion of the module, the successful student will have acquired:

Knowledge:

* Critically evaluate the contribution that leadership and management make to organisational success;
* Explain the importance of organisational structure and leadership and the contribution that HR services make to the way in which organisations grow and change;
* Critically evaluate the role of the customer in continuous improvement and quality systems;
* Identify the process of group formation and structure and the role of the individual in groups and teams;
* Understand the link between individual motivators, culture and communication and their role in a high performance culture;
* Analyse the external business environment and demonstrate appropriate practical responses;
* Critically evaluate the processes of organisational decision making and leadership in organisations;
* Evaluate the management functions in an organisation that contribute to organisations success.

Skills:

* an ability to select and apply a variety of different models to analysis of an organisations internal and external environment;
* an ability to collect, analyse and interpret a variety of data from a range of sources to support decision making;
* an ability to lead a team and work in a team.

Contents

The object of the sessions is to communicate the module aims and the syllabus, accessible to those who have no theoretical background in this subject. The lecture will also provide you with an introduction to a significant number of theories and concepts relating to the subject.

Sessions will be based around activities often worked upon in small groups which are designed to consolidate, monitor and test your understanding and application of the module material.

Requirements

Knowledge of business, at least at supervisory level (Middlesex students: with Programme Leaders permission)

All courses (except Spanish and French options) are taught in English and require TOEFL 550 (IELTS 6.0) or the equivalent if English is a second language.
