The Summer Course, held in English, deals specifically with the European system of human rights protection. Although there are numerous summer courses and other special study programs within Europe on human rights protection, this course provides an integrated treatment of the various European systems and specifically of European issues of human rights protection.
It emphasizes, therefore, important matters relevant to European countries with their very diverse political, economic and social systems. The subject matter includes human rights protection under the regimes of the Council of Europe, the European Union and the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, as well on the universal level of public international law where this is especially relevant to Europe.
The treatment of the substantive regimes and their specific rights catalogues is set against the background of a consideration of the philosophical, historical, political, economic and sociological aspects of human rights, and includes matters of legal and institutional practice such as complaint procedures. Practical and contemporary issues, such as the protection of human rights in situations of war or civil disorder, will also be addressed.
The teaching staff comes from the different partner universities and each faculty member enjoys a high reputation in his respective field.
Accommodation in modern students apartments (containing either single or twin bedrooms, with own kitchen and bathroom) will be provided for each participant. The costs for accomodation are included in the fees which will be charged. Please refer to the course description site for more details.
Important!Lectures will take place in Germany, but accommodation will be located in Slubice, Poland (across the Oder River from Frankfurt). Therefore, each participant may, depending on nationality, be required to hold multiple entry visas for both Germany and Poland (must be obtained before arrival!)
This comprehensive course is presented by a dedicated group of experienced experts and teachers from universities in different European countries, coordinated by the Viadrina European University Frankfurt (Oder) (Germany). The partner institutions are the Universities of Wales at Aberystwyth and Hull (United Kingdom), Lund (Sweden), Utrecht and Rotterdam (Netherlands), Barcelona (Spain),
Malta (Republic of Malta), Maribor (Slovenia) and Salzburg (Austria) and the German Red Cross.
In broad outline, the program includes the following:
The course is designed for advanced undergraduate students or recent graduates from all countries of both Western and Eastern Europe, and other regions of the world and aims to provide them with an opportunity to expand their knowledge of human rights law and policy within the transnational European context. Young graduate participants from national and international organizations or NGOs are also welcome. The course will be attended by about 60 students from up to 30 different countries.
Instruction takes the form of lectures and tutorials. A special element is the conduct of a moot court (fictional court proceeding), giving participants a chance to practice their advocacy skills as if before an international human rights court. A city tour, library tour, a special evening guest lecture, and an excursion to the German capital, Berlin, are included in the two-week program. 10 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System) Points are awarded for the participation in the Summer Course.
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test if you come from a non-English speaking country.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
