Contributing to sustainable tourism development worldwide Do you want to learn how tourism can contribute to the economic, environmental and social development of your country and to understand the role of your organization in this process? By exchanging views with experts in the field of sustainable tourism development, our STM program provides you with new insights into the main concepts, best practices and tools necessary to develop sustainable tourism.
We explore how tourism can contribute to local economic development, poverty alleviation and nature conservation. We demonstrate the importance of entrepreneurship, management and marketing in promoting sustainable tourism initiatives, whilst developing your ability to communicate and negotiate with the main stakeholders in the sector.
Part of the program will involve distance-learning/education. You are expected to work on a preparatory assignment before coming to Maastricht. Drawing on the knowledge and insights gained during the course, you will also work on a final assignment after the course.
Why this program
Tourism has become one of the world’s most significant sources of employment and GDP, and it is now widely recognized as one of the world’s largest industries. This rapid growth has encouraged many developing nations to view tourism as a key factor in realizing economic growth. If tourism is organized in a sustainable way, it can provide ample opportunities for economic growth, poverty alleviation and biodiversity conservation. It can also be a powerful tool to address other important crosscutting issues such as gender equality, health, education, entrepreneurship and good governance. The STM program provides insights into how tourism can positively contribute to sustainable development by highlighting the main issues at stake, the stakeholders involved and the best practices deployed.
