The aim of this course is to present the basis of spoken and written Italian. During the course the students will learn how to communicate in simple everyday situations and will also get in touch with some relevant Italian cultural features. The course is focused on communication: a pragmatic approach will be used, grammar and other theoretical aspects of the language will be discovered step by step together with the instructor. Students will also practice a lot of phonetics in order to learn how to read, write and spell properly the Italian language sounds.
Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore will offer from June 9 until July 8, 2011 a course of 100 contact hours of Italian language and culture for students at the beginner's and intermediate level. Students will be hosted at the university as of June 8 until July 9.
ITALIAN CULTURE AND SOCIETY TOPICS
The City of Milan - Money is Power, how the financial capital, which is located in the richest region of the country, is emblematic of a cultural divide between North and South.
The Italian Industries and their impact on the social fabric of the country, the case of fashion and design, media, and the issue of gender.
Italy in Film, national and international representations of Italy and Italian culture in film.
The course will include also site visits within the City of Milan. Students will also have the opportunity to do trips to various places in the region of Lombardy.
60 hours of language instruction (40 hours intensive the first two weeks + 20 hours the last two weeks)
40 hours of culture based instruction (in English)
· Current enrollment at an institution of higher education
· Good academic standing
· Grade Point Average of 3.00 or higher, or equivalent
· Completion of a minimum of 2 terms at undergraduate level
Students requesting admission to the Business or the Italian Language and Business Programs who are non-native speakers of English must submit a min. TOEFL score of 80 iBT or an IELTS score of 6.
Students requesting admission to the Italian Language and Culture or the Italian Language and Business Programs must take an online language proficiency test before arrival. Applicants will be given instructions upon admission on how to proceed with the online testing.
