Jointly arranged by the Research Education Programme RECETO and STAiR as a collaboration of wetland researchers from Aarhus University (AU), University of Copenhagen (KU) and University of Sourthern Denmark (SDU).
This course provides an introduction to phosphorus dynamics and management in wetlands spanning from environmental regulations and legislation over phosphorus biogeochemistry, monitoring and wetlands hydrology to modern strategies for use of
wetlands as bufferzones to reduce eutrophication of freshwaters. The course is a tool course with emphasis on fundamental understanding and computational approaches in phosphorus processes and mass balances, the legislative frames targeting surface water quality, and the approaches and technologies to be used in best management of wetlands used for phosphorus retention.
Several teachers covering wetland biogeochemistry, hydrology, hydrodynamics, biology and modelling will contribute to the teaching during the intensive course. Further guest teachers will give lectures during the evening sessions. Course teachers are:
* Professor Hans Christian Bruun Hansen, University of Copenhagen, Faculty of Life Sciences (KU, LIFE)
* Research professor Brian Kronvang, Aarhus University, National Environmental Research Institute (AU, NERI)
* Senior scientist Carl Christian Hoffmann, Aarhus University, National Environmental Research Institut (AU, NERI)
* Associate professor Henning S. Jensen, University of Southern Denmark, Biology (SDU, BI)
* Associate professor Mogens Flindt, University of Southern Denmark, Biology (SDU, BI)
* Senior scientist Charlotte Kjærgaard, Aarhus University, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences (AU, DJF)
Preparatory week: 14th - 19th September
Intensive course at Research Centre Foulum: 20th - 26th September
Research Centre Foulum is located 10 km east of Viborg in the
center of Jutland,
Accomodation
Accomodation will be arranged at Danhostel Viborg.
Transport between danhostel Viborg and Research Centre Foulum will be organized.
Evening lectures will be given at the meeting facilities at Danhostel.
The course includes one week of preparation at home institutions followed by one week of intensive course 20th-26th September 2009 at Aarhus University, Faculty of Agricultural Sciences, Research Centre Foulum. Research Centre Foulum is located close to Viborg in the center of Jutland Denmark.
The preparatory part includes reading course literature and preparing a small excercise to be presented during the intensive course.
The intensive course includes lectures, exercises, field excursions and project work. Project work is carried out in groups of 3-5 students and targets wetland hydrology, biogeochemistry, modelling and water quality aspects of wetland restoration and management.
A new course is planned to be held in 2010 or 2011. Please contact course coordinator Senior Scientist Charlotte Kjaergaard if you are interested in attending a new course.
The course credit is 5 ECTS points.

* Wetland restoration and management
You are normally required to take an English Proficiency Test.
Most European Universities recognise the IELTS test.
Take testThe course addresses Ph.D. students who seek an overview of structure, processes and functions of riparian wetlands, and who want to use this knowledge in relation to wetland management and restoration. The number of participants is limited to 25.
