Research & Careers in Denmark

Research

High-quality PhD programmes

Research plays a key role in Danish society. With its position among the world’s top six countries in R&D expenditure, Denmark offers world-class PhD and industrial research programmes.

Fully funded university and industrial PhDs

As a PhD student in Denmark you usually receive a salary, and there are no tuition fees. Industrial PhDs are collaborations between a university and a company with no obligation to teach. Whichever type of PhD you choose, you can expect excellent equipment and research facilities.

A Danish PhD programme usually lasts three years. The components of the programme are:

  • Independent research under supervision
  • Courses for PhD students (approximately 30 ECTS credits)
  • Participation in research networks, including placements at other, primarily foreign, research institutions
  • Teaching or another form of knowledge dissemination, which is, as far as possible, related to the PhD topic
  • The completion of a PhD thesis

The general admission requirements for PhD programmes include a Candidatus/Master’s degree or equivalent comparable to the Danish two-year Candidatus/Master’s degree. In some areas, a four-year PhD programme is offered to students who have completed a Bachelor’s qualification and one year of study at postgraduate level.

Living in Denmark

Student Life

Denmark – a gateway to Europe

Denmark is located north of Germany and south of Sweden. It is a part of Scandinavia and acts as a bridge between northern and southen Europe. This makes Denmark a good starting point for exploring the other Nordic countries and the rest of Europe.

Lifestyle

When you come to Denmark, you will probably notice the relaxed atmosphere, the clean environment, and that things generally run smoothly.

You may also find that living is not cheap. However, if you are sensible and follow local customs, like cycling and eating in, it should not blow your budget.

Winters with a warm ambience

Let’s be honest, the weather in Denmark is not always made for t-shirts. The short-lived Danish summers are warm with midnight sunsets. However, winters in Denmark also have their share of warmth, with lit streets, social life and plenty of hot chocolate. Danes often refer to this feeling of warmth as 'hygge'; perhaps the epitome of social life in Denmark.

Open-minded and slightly reserved

According to stereotypes, Danes are open-minded and slightly reserved. As ever, such labels are limiting, but do hold some truth. Danes are helpful and trusting people who value common sense and respect for others. Now, if you come from a village in Brazil where everyone greets in the streets, Denmark will probably feel different. However, if you're willing to take the first step, you’ll soon find that Danes are open and warm people.

A dynamic and innovative society

If you have the talent and work hard, Denmark is a place with ample opportunities. Today, Denmark ranks as one of the most innovative and least corrupt countries in the world. It is one of the top countries in producing and attracting talent, and it ranks first in entrepreneurship and opportunity.

However, to also realize that Denmark is not a perfect society is key to sustaining an equitable and prosperous society where everyone can realize their unique potential.
